A True Champion’s Walk Ends
We all know the Proclaimer’s song 500 miles in which a man claims he would walk 1000 miles for the woman he loves. This type of dedication is the stuff that only dreams and hollywood chick flicks are made of. However, today a true quest was ended by a man who put in 2,000 extra miles for people who doesn’t even know or are in love with. Ex New York Giant George Martin ended a journey which took him from New York City all the way to San Diego. A journey which took him over 10 months was for a purpose which has sadly become forgotten. On September 11th, 2001 when our nation was attacked and the first responders were the people who divided into rubble to pull out the survivors and those who were lost. However, toxic material from the building, the lack of proper equipment for those responders, and the inability of the government to protect those brave souls has left many with reoccering health problems and others dead. George Martin, an ex nfl player and super bowl champion, did what so many government officials have failed to do. He took a stand of his own and made a mission of his own to fight for these people. He would raise over 2 million dollars for the first responders and would shine a light on those who needed the help most. In a nation where often our sports stars fall both in their prime (Pac Man Jones) and in their post life (OJ Simpson). It is beautiful to see someone who has risen above his own self worth to give back to those who gave so much for us. Not only should he be hailed as a role model for young black youth, he should also be a shining example for all americans. While there is no citizen of the year award in this fine country…if there was he certainly get my vote.
